THE DAY TRIPPERS British Invasion Dance Party
The Day Trippers is a band dedicated to playing 60s-style rock'n'roll, drawing its broad repertoire not just from that decade’s ‘greats’ - Kinks, Beatles, Stones, Animals, Easybeats, Who, Steppenwolf, Monkees, Creedence, Troggs, Chuck Berry, Beach Boys, Van Morrison, Swinging Blue Jeans, Spencer Davis Group etc - but making regular smash-and-grabs from other decades, plundering musical gems to broaden out the night; a smattering of 50s from the likes of Roy Orbison, Eddie Cochrane, Carl Perkins and Dion, to killer tunes from some 70s and 80s giants: Tina Turner, Queen, Dire Straits, Sunny Boys, Romantics, Ray Charles, Jim Croce and more.
Make no mistake, The Day Trippers is a guitar-driven three-piece band, although perhaps ‘power trio’ might better describe them. Guitar is king, and the Day Trippers repertoire showcases big guitar numbers, which also include some of the giant reverb-soaked instrumentals from the Shadows, Searchers, Ventures, and Australia's very own Atlantics.
Guitarist/vocalist Michael Spooner is the driving force behind the Day Trippers, with a career in music spanning nearly 40 years. Some highlights include supporting ‘The Best of British’ tour at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, rubbing shoulders with Herman’s Hermits, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Searchers, Foundations and more; performing on River Stage at Expo ‘88, and playing ‘George Harrison’ in ‘The Australian Beatles Show’ which toured across Australia, and eventually to Canada and the USA in the 80s and 90s. The Day Trippers sound is filled out by Canadian drummer Mike Oakley and english bassist/vocalist Dave smith, who bring a wealth of experience to the band.
